This gothic cathedral is a sanctuary for everyone. I started this project to test out the new tuff brick variants as a building material. Along the way, I had a thought that drastically changed the theme of this build; what if I put pride flags as the stained glass windows of the church? I immediately recognized this as a somewhat controversial idea. Often society views faith and queerness as opposing beliefs, but what if I crafted a space where these concepts were not mutually exclusive? From then I completely redesigned the structure to feature projections of pride flags from the windows. Using Complimentary: Unbound shaders (let me know if it works with others) I designed the clerestory windows to project pride flags at different times and locations within the cathedral. Spend enough time in the nave and you can see gay, lesbian, trans, and non-binary pride flags formed by the rays of light coming through the windows. (In default orientation only) This cathedral features 13 spires representing Jesus and the 12 disciples. I am by no means an expert in any religion, but Jesus sought out people who were cast out by society, and worked to understand and care for their needs. I believe it is important, now more than ever, to give people in the LGBTQ+ community a space to be visible and feel protected by everyone. I feel my inclusion of symbolism intended to make people feel seen and safe aligns with the example that Christ set for us.
